THE TRANS
(R)EVOLUTION
THE TRANS (R)EVOLUTION is an emerging documentary film which journeys with Zoey Black, a transgender woman of colour, as she meets queer and trans people around South Africa. The film is an exploration of the struggle and violences we face, and, more importantly, a grounding of the joys and resilience of what it means to live an ordinary extraordinary life.
TRAILER
ABOUT
THE TRANS (R)EVOLUTION is made by trans and gender diverse people to broaden the scope of trans representation on screen. Trans people in South Africa, and globally, will be able to see themselves represented in the film, with trans stories being told by trans people.
The film is an educational tool for the broader public in developing a language and context for queer and trans people in South Africa, as well as as an advocacy tool for furthering the development of legal and policy protections for transgender people in South Africa, the region and globally.
SIGNIFICANCE
Trans, non-binary and gender diverse people remain an incredibly vulnerable population, with most facing extraordinary forms of discrimination and violence. Global academic studies estimate the life expectancy of transgender women of colour to be 35 years.
With the lack of representation of transgender and gender diverse persons in the arts, media and government, THE TRANS (R)EVOLUTION addresses and explores social and political issues pertaining specifically to the trans community in South Africa. With the momentum of growing global trans visibility, and the commitment of the South African government to provide better legal protection for transgender people, THE TRANS (R)EVOLUTION comes at an auspicious time to document the changing landscape for trans people in South Africa today.
We journey through the world of trans lives, through queer activism, and shed light on a community that has largely been erased from the history books.
Through broadening and deepening trans narratives, we give dignity to our community. This is only possible by allowing trans people to tell our stories in our own way. Accessing stories and characters that we are able to identify with are incredibly important for self-acceptance and holistic wellbeing. Through filmmaking, these stories are made available to a community who is desperately lacking public and media representation, and legal and policy protections.
We have always been here. These are our stories.
