ABOUT

THEY WILL BE QUEENS is a vibrant feature-length documentary that resurrects the spirit of Kewpie, a trans icon from Apartheid-era District Six, through the electrifying lens of Salon Kewpie: The Legacy Project

Salon Kewpie: The Legacy Project originated through the partnership between GALA Queer Archive and the District Six Museum, which utilises the Kewpie Photographic Collection as a means for artistic exploration of queer identities. Framed through the lens of Ballroom, the Salon Kewpie Collective hosts an annual workshop programme, creating a space for queer youth to engage with the Kewpie Photographic Collection, learn valuable skills, and be in community with one another.

THEY WILL BE QUEENS weaves together archival treasures with the raw energy of a contemporary celebration, exploring the transformative power of remembrance and the enduring spirit of queer resistance. We journey with Collective through the week long workshop and document the power of the programme. Culminating in a Ball extravaganza. The film celebrates queer resilience and the transformative power of reclaiming heritage, showcasing the enduring impact of Kewpie's legacy.
